Defense Secretary Liberman?

I just cannot for the life of me understand why some (what I thought to be) respectable senators — like John McCain and Joe Lieberman — are willingly crawling into bed with the most partisan, self-righteous, unaccountable, corrupt, dishonest and wrong administration ever. Politics and powerful have an incredibly corrupting influence. On yesterday's Sunday morning news mags, the rumor was going around about the possibility that Joe Liberman might replace Rumsfeld. While Rumsfeld needs to go, another administration shill doesn't need to replace him; we need someone who knows what they're doing and how to effectively manage this quagmire. Atrios has the best comments on the whole idea:
It's hard to imagine a worse choice for Secretary of Defense, except maybe the stupidest f**king guy on the face of the earth, but rumors are apparently floating around the ether that he may replace Rumsfeld. Schieffer said it on Face the Nation, Sullivan on Chris Matthews' show, etc. It'd be a smart move for the Bush administration. The press loves them some Lieberman, and they love them some "bipartisanship." Rumsfeld's clearly mad as a hatter these days and needs to go for reasons going beyond mendacious incompetence. Connecticut has a Republican governor at the moment and could appoint a Republican replacement in the Senate, making it easy for the new "incumbent" to win the seat in an election. And Holy Joe's already gone throgh his bit of ritual hazing, demonstrating his willingness to put his name on a pack of lies in service to the Bush administration. Politics aside, though, what a nightmare.
